Flu Season is Coming

Each year, influenza kills more people in the U.S. than all other vaccine-preventable diseases combined. For the 2008-2009 flu season, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics have expanded the recommendation for flu vaccination to include all children ages six months to 18 years

Inactivated (killed) influenza vaccine has been used in the United States for many years. The vaccine is updated yearly since influenza viruses change constantly. Protection develops in about two weeks and lasts up to one year. Some people who get the flu vaccine may still get the flu, but it will usually be a milder case than those who didn't get the shot.

This year most patients above the age of 2 will have the option of receiving intranasal flumist instead of getting a shot. Flumist is a live antenuated influenza vaccine which can not make you sick, but protects you from the real flu for the entire season. Flumist is safe for almost all patients except those with severe asthma. If you have any questions, please ask our amazing nurses.

We will be administering the flu vaccine for our patients starting October 1st. Please call on or after October 1, 2008 to schedule a nurse appointment.
